Dog Days of Summer…
The dog days of summer typically refer to the hottest and most humid period of the year, which generally falls between July 3rd and August 11th. This period is named after the star Sirius, also known as the Dog Star, which is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (the Greater Dog). Ancient Romans associated the rising of Sirius with the hottest part of the summer and believed it contributed to the intense heat.
I would have to agree that this July-August has been some of the hottest and most humid days experienced in a long time.
August is associated with back-to-school days, tax free weekends, and school supply drives. Have you ever wondered what else August is known for? I hope these fun little facts help take your mind off these hot, sultry “Dog Days of Summer”.

National Raspberry Cream Pie Day on August 1 takes advantage of ripe raspberries available this time of year.
NATIONAL GRAB SOME NUTS DAY
There are many "nut" days throughout the year such as National Almond Day, National Pistachio Day, and National Pecan Day, but August 3rd embraces them all. It's National Grab Some Nuts Day!
NATIONAL WATERMELON DAY
National Watermelon Day on August 3 recognizes the refreshing summertime treat enjoyed at picnics and fairs! And since watermelon is 92% water, it is very satisfying in the summer heat.
NATIONAL ROOT BEER FLOAT DAY
On August 6 we celebrate National Root Beer Float Day to tell us to float a scoop of vanilla ice cream in an ice-cold mug of frothy root beer. The classic beverage creates a creamy treat loved by generations!
NATIONAL HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY
Smile on August 8th to share in National Happiness Happens Day. On this day each year just let it happen. You know. Happiness. Because happiness happens.
NATIONAL VINYL RECORD DAY
Get spinning on August 12 with National Vinyl Record Day! Whether it's the Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Monkees, Johnny Cash, or the Bee Gees, vinyl records have a sound all their own. Most will agree, vintage vinyl is as classic as the bands themselves.
NATIONAL TELL A JOKE DAY
What happened to the comedian on August 16 during National Tell A Joke Day? Everyone stole his punchlines! All joking aside, get out there and laugh a little and tell some funny ones.
NATIONAL BE AN ANGEL DAY
On August 22, National Be an Angel Day encourages good deeds and kindness to others. By supporting those in need and inspiring others to be kind, we display an act of an angel here on earth.
NATIONAL JUST BECAUSE DAY
On August 27, National Just Because Day offers up an opportunity to do stuff...just because. So, feel free to celebrate this day any way you choose. Just because!
NATIONAL GRIEF AWARENESS DAY
On August 30, National Grief Awareness Day recognizes the time it takes to heal from loss doesn't have a prescribed course and is a reminder closure comes in many forms. When a loved one dies, the void they leave affects everyone differently.
