Called to Serve
As we observe Labor Day, we give thanks for the many ways people contribute through their work, service, caregiving, and daily responsibilities. We recognize those who labor in offices, schools, hospitals, businesses, homes, farms, and communities. We also give thanks for those whose work may not always be seen or publicly acknowledged—the parents and grandparents who care for their families, the neighbors who lend a helping hand, and the individuals who faithfully carry out the everyday tasks that help others flourish.
Every task—whether recognized by others or quietly offered in love—can reflect God’s grace and care for the world. Our work is more than a way to earn a living or complete a responsibility; it can be an opportunity to use the gifts God has given us for the good of others. When we approach our work with honesty, compassion, patience, and excellence, we become partners in God’s ongoing work of healing, serving, and building up the world around us.
I would like to offer a special word of appreciation for the volunteers of Providence Presbyterian. Through your time, talents, generosity, and willingness to help, you strengthen our ministries and make our church a welcoming place of worship, fellowship, and service. Whether you serve on a committee, prepare communion, greet visitors, teach a class, sing in the choir, maintain the church grounds, organize an event, provide transportation, prepare meals, or assist with outreach, your contributions make a meaningful difference.
Much of what happens in our congregation is possible because faithful volunteers answer the call to serve—often behind the scenes and without seeking recognition. You give your time when schedules are busy, offer your talents when there are many demands, and step forward when help is needed. Your dedication creates opportunities for worship, learning, fellowship, and ministry. Through your service, you help Providence Presbyterian remain a place where people can encounter God’s love and feel welcomed, supported, and encouraged.
Your service is a blessing to our church and a witness to God’s love. It reminds us that ministry is not carried out by a few people, but by the whole body of Christ working together. Each act of service, no matter how large or small, is valuable. A kind word, a helping hand, a prepared meal, a thoughtful prayer, or a willingness to take responsibility can become a powerful expression of faith.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23
This verse reminds us that our work has meaning when it is offered faithfully to God. We are called not only to our occupations, but also to serve our families, our neighbors, our church, and our communities. Christian service is not limited to a particular place or position. It can be found in the ordinary moments of each day—in listening to someone who is hurting, encouraging a friend, welcoming a stranger, helping a neighbor, or offering our abilities for the benefit of others.
At the same time, Labor Day invites us to remember the importance of rest, renewal, and gratitude. God created us not only to work, but also to pause, breathe, worship, and receive the gift of rest. In a world that often tells us to keep producing and accomplishing, Sabbath reminds us that our worth does not depend on how much we complete. We are beloved children of God before we ever accomplish a task or fulfill a responsibility.
May this Labor Day encourage us to honor the dignity of every kind of work, to express gratitude for those who serve, and to look for new opportunities to share our gifts. May we also be mindful of those who are unemployed, underemployed, overworked, or seeking fair and meaningful work. As followers of Christ, may we advocate for dignity, compassion, justice, and care for all who labor.
May Providence Presbyterian continue to be a congregation called to serve—Rooted in Faith, Nurtured by Grace, and Growing God’s Kingdom. May our words, actions, and ministries reflect the love of Christ in everything we do. To all who give their time and energy, thank you for helping our church live out its mission. Your faithfulness strengthens our congregation, blesses our community, and brings glory to God.
