Providence Presbyterian Church was named by its founders in 1964. The term providence comes from the Latin word providentia meaning foresight or forethought. It is related to the term providere which means to provide for or take precautions for. When we speak of God’s providence, we are naming the gracious sovereignty by which God orders the world for our good, even when we cannot yet see the path. God’s providential care is not a vague benevolence nor a mere doctrine of the church; it is a lived reality to be trusted. Scripture speaks of God’s care for his creation as intimate and intentional.

God’s love provides, protects, and sustains. The church becomes a living sign of God’s provision for the world he loves. Throughout the history of Providence Presbyterian Church, you can see God’s hand at work, ministering to this community and bringing God’s kingdom on earth. God knew there would be a need for a safe, nurturing place for children to be while their parents worked. So, God brought together a group of people with the necessary skills, gifts, and talents to organize what would become the Providence Child Development Center. Through God’s providence, the CDC ministry of Providence PC(USA) has grown and continues to serve families in our community

God knew there would be a need for nutritious meals in this community. God brought together people with gifts, talents, and compassion to organize and maintain our Holy Casseroley ministry. Every month members of our community receive a tangible reminder of God’s providential love in the form of a casserole.

There are many other examples of God at work through the ministries of Providence Presbyterian Church. However, most of these examples can be found in the quiet encouragement and support that our members provide for one another and for the community.

For we who bear the name Providence, our lives are a liturgy of trust—our days, our resources, and our relationships all bearing witness to a God who knows us, who plans for our good, and who invites us into his generous work in the world. May we respond with faith-filled obedience. May our lives be living testimonies to the God who provides.
