Celebrate Music Appreciation Month!
May is Music Appreciation Month. It is a perfect time to celebrate the powerful role music plays in our lives. Whether it's a favorite song that lifts our spirits, a symphony that moves us, or a rhythm that gets us dancing, music connects us across cultures, generations, and emotions.
Throughout Scripture, music plays a vital role in worship, community, and expression of faith. From the psalms of David to the hymns of the early church, music has been a way for God’s people to offer praise, lament, and joy.
In the Presbyterian tradition, music is not just an accompaniment to worship — it is an act of worship itself. Through singing, playing instruments, and listening thoughtfully, we participate in the living Word of God. Our hymns, anthems, and spiritual songs teach theology, nurture the spirit, and build up the body of Christ.
During Music Appreciation Month, we give thanks for:
● Our choir members, musicians, and music director who lead us in worship each week
● The great heritage of hymns and psalms that shape our faith
● The power of music to unite, comfort, and inspire across all ages and cultures
Ways to Celebrate:
● Take time to reflect on the meaning of the hymns we sing each Sunday
● Learn about the rich history of Presbyterian hymnody, from the Psalter to "Glory to God" (our current hymnal)
● Listen prayerfully to sacred music throughout the week
● Pray for music ministries everywhere, that they continue to glorify God and draw others closer to Christ
I would love to know what your favorite hymns are.
Let us sing, play, and listen with joy and gratitude this month and always!
A Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Gift of Music
Gracious and Loving God,
We thank You for the gift of music —
for melodies that lift our spirits,
for harmonies that unite our hearts,
and for rhythms that move our souls.
You have placed a song within creation,
and You invite us to join in the chorus of praise.
Through music, You comfort us in sorrow,
celebrate with us in joy,
and draw us closer to Your heart.
We give thanks for those who share their musical gifts:
for composers, who craft melodies of beauty;
for musicians and choirs, who lead us in worship;
for teachers, who nurture gifts in others;
for all who help us to hear Your voice in new ways.
Bless the music ministries of Your Church,
that through every note and every word,
Your name may be glorified,
and Your people may be uplifted and renewed.
Let our lives be a living song,
offering praise and thanksgiving to You,
our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer.
Amen.
Blessings to you and your family,
Rosie Robinson
