The Young Adult Sunday School (young at heart and in spirit) has been studying Reading the Bible for Understanding by James E. Davison. The study focuses on a balanced approach — using head, heart, and hands — to deepen our reading and application of Scripture.
Head: Read attentively and seek accurate understanding. We use teachers, pastors, and trusted commentaries to clarify historical context, language, and meaning so the text speaks clearly to us.
Heart: Approach Scripture with openness and prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide our understanding and to transform our attitudes and priorities as we read.
Hands: Put study into practice by applying insights to daily life and church ministry. Careful interpretation requires effort—discussion and faithful action.
Davison also highlights PC(USA) interpretive principles to guide readers: honor Christ as the center of Scripture; respect the “rule of faith”; follow the “rule of love”; interpret passages in light of the whole Bible; and focus on the plain text. (Reading the Bible for Understanding, Session 1, pages 9–10)
We have a few sessions left in this book and will then apply these principles in a study of the Parables. All ages are welcome — please join us Sundays at 9:45 a.m. in the church parlor for discussion, fellowship, and practical faith-building.
Blessings to you and yours,
Rosie Robinson
