Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18)

Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity to pause and recognize the many ways God blesses us. We give thanks for family and friends, for the beauty of creation, for the food we share, and for the people who make our lives richer through their kindness and love. Most of all, we give thanks for God’s unfailing grace and the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, the Apostle Paul offers three simple instructions for Christian living: rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances. These are more than words for a holiday. They describe a way of life rooted in the goodness and faithfulness of God.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice! (Philippians 4:4)

Gratitude opens our eyes to God's goodness. Our joy is grounded in the Lord, whose goodness surrounds us in countless ways. Sometimes we recognize God’s blessings in extraordinary moments; other times, we discover them in the ordinary gifts of each day—a shared meal, a word of encouragement, a beautiful morning, or the fellowship of a church family.

Gratitude helps us notice these gifts and receive them with joyful hearts. As we count our blessings, we are reminded that every good gift ultimately points us toward the generosity of our heavenly Father.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James 1:17).

Prayer keeps us connected to God. Paul encourages us to bring everything to God in prayer, with thanksgiving.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

Prayer is an invitation to share our lives with the One who loves us. We bring our joys and concerns, celebrate answered prayers, seek wisdom for the days ahead, and trust God to guide us.

When thanksgiving becomes part of our prayers, we begin to recognize how God has been at work in our lives and in our community. We remember God’s faithfulness in the past and find courage to follow Him into the future.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. (Colossians 2:6-7)

Gratitude overflows into generosity. A grateful heart does not keep its blessings to itself. It shares them through acts of kindness, generous giving, compassionate service, and encouragement to others.

As a church, we have much to celebrate: the opportunity to worship together, grow in faith, support one another, and serve our neighbors in Christ's name. Our gratitude becomes a living testimony to God's love when we extend that love to others.

And at the heart of all our thanksgiving is Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, we receive forgiveness, new life, and the promise of God's eternal love. As Paul assures us in Romans 8:38–39, nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. This is a gift worth celebrating every day of the year!

A Thanksgiving Invitation

This Thanksgiving, let us make gratitude more than a tradition around the dinner table. Let us carry it into our worship, our conversations, our service, and our daily lives. May we rejoice in God's goodness, remain faithful in prayer, and share His blessings generously with others.

We do not give thanks because every day is perfect. We give thanks because God is good, His grace sustains us, and His love in Jesus Christ is our sure and lasting hope.

May our hearts overflow with thanksgiving—not only for what God has done, but also for the joy of belonging to Him and the privilege of sharing His love with the world.

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. (Colossians 3:15)
