Christian Education

If you didn’t make it to church this past Sunday, April 23th you missed a great day.  One of my most favorite Sundays, a Baptism Sunday.  The Providence Family was honored to be a part of Clyde Earl Perry’s Baptism.

I have always been fascinated with the Sacrament of Baptism, even as a small child.  As a little girl I would get all excited about being able to say “yes” to the questions asked by the minister.

“Do you, as members of the church of Jesus Christ, promise to guide and nurture [babies name] by word and deed, with love and prayer?  Will you encourage them to know, trust, and follow Christ, and to be faithful members of his church?”

You see, I was the little girl, along with my sister, that was nurtured by my church family.  With my parents both being worship leaders, either in the choir loft or the pulpit, I sat in church with adopted grandmothers.  I was cared for by Sunday School teachers and Vacation Bible school leaders for years and years.  It was with the help of the members of Acton Presbyterian and Covenant Presbyterian churches that I was able to grow in my faith.  I learned by their example that it was my responsibility to nurture the little ones that came up behind me.  Those wonderful church family members exemplified the scripture where Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 19:14.

I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without the actions of my church family. Some might say that it was because of my mom that I went off to college and received a degree in Christian Education, but that really isn’t why I did it.  I felt called to follow the baptismal promise I made each and every time a child was baptized.  I hope and pray that the members of Providence do the same for the children that we have been given the privilege to guide and nurture, by word and deed, with love and prayer.

With all of this being said I hope everyone has had a chance to see the new Little Tikes section of the sanctuary.  We now have a child friendly area in the sanctuary where the little ones can stand, sit, crawl, move and still be a part of the worship service.  I promise you can’t miss it, look for the multi color padded flooring.

In closing enjoy the silly knock-knock jokes from the children’s message from this past Sunday.
